Gietu’s Story

In the vibrant community of Oakland, California, lives 81-year-old Gietu, a skilled tradesman originally from East Africa. Owner of his own shop, he has spent decades honing his craft, contributing both to his livelihood and the local economy.

Life took an unexpected turn when subtle changes in his vision began to surface. Initially, the cataract in his eye didn’t seem to affect him much. However, he noticed the cloudiness worsening, gradually interfering with the precise work his trade demands. Tasks that once were second nature started to require extra effort and concentration.

Concerned about the impact on his business and daily life, Gietu sought medical advice. Referred by Multaclinic in Oakland, he found his way to the Pacific Vision Surgery Center (PVSC), a facility renowned for its patient-centered care and advanced ophthalmic treatments.

At PVSC, he met Dr. Susan Longar, an experienced ophthalmologist specializing in cataract surgery. After a comprehensive evaluation, Dr. Longar recommended a phacoemulsification cataract extraction with intraocular lens implantation—a procedure designed to remove the cloudy lens and replace it with a clear artificial one.

With his son by his side to assist with translation, Gietu felt supported and understood throughout the process. The surgery was successful, and the improvement in his vision was remarkable.

Now, with his sight restored, Gietu can return to his shop with renewed confidence and precision, continuing to contribute his skills to the community he loves.

Pacific Vision Surgery Center’s commitment extends beyond medical excellence; through their Patient Assistance Fund, they provide financial aid to uninsured patients, ensuring that more people like Gietu have access to life-changing eye care.
